Afternoon at Stearn's Wharf & 1000 Geocaches!

In the week preceding Thanksgiving, we found time to geocache on our exploration walks.

Amazing cacti in a nearby neighborhood.

We took a family outing to Stearn's Wharf.

Waiting for the muggles to clear out so we can snag the geocache just to the right of Patrick.

Austin was impatient and snagged it even with folks waiting right next to him.

Ingenious geocache - an altoids container painted yellow and slipped into part of an old, nonfunctioning parking meter booth.

We were invited to play games one afternoon.

We had our Book Club party (including ice cream!) on the book Wonder.

I took the kids to Hendry's beach one afternoon near sunset.

I turned around after watching the sunset with the girls and discovered Austin had scaled up this cliff face. He was so proud of himself.

On Saturday morning, we got up and decided to find our 1000th geocache. Our goal had been to find 1000 before our 3 year geocaching anniversary the following week. Patrick thought that finding a geocache out on the breakwater would be a memorable find. So we threw on our sweatshirts and started down the breakwater.

Unfortunately, we didn't check the tide schedule; it was high tide that morning. Which meant that the waves hit the breakwater high and hard, many coming over the wall. We thought we were safe as all the waves seemed to just go over the top and no further. We posed the kids for a photo with the harbor in the background and heard a slam of water hit the breakwater wall. Then the wave covered the entire width of the breakwater and soaked all 5 of us thoroughly. We had water dripping inside our shirts and pants. The kids started crying as they were shocked and suddenly very cold. So we gave up plans for a breakwater 1000th cache and headed back to the van to regroup. (They did let me take this one photo before we left.)

Once we were back at the car, we changed into dry clothes and decided to grab a cache within the harbor. There it is - in plain sight!

Assessing how to tackle it

Success!
