Carolyn came down from Massachusetts to spend the holiday weekend with us. She arrived around lunchtime on Saturday; Amelia, Carolyn and I headed out for a fancy tea in the afternoon. I don't think Amelia has ever consumed so much sugar in one meal; the "Princess" tea consisted of tea sandwiches with fluffernutter and nutella, a scone and a dessert plate. But fun was had by all!
On Saturday, we drove into Philadelphia to go to the Museum of the American Revolution.
We all enjoyed the museum; we learned a lot of random facts we didn't know. Amelia loved getting to go through it since they are studying the American Revolution in Social Studies. We appreciated getting to learn about the Revolution from the Native American & African slave perspective; neither one of those are something one learns about in school. While we were disappointed by the lack of novel artifacts, the complete story presented and spaces for kids made it worth the trip.
The privateer's ship and getting to practice being part of the canon crew was a highlight.
They actually had a replica of the Rising Sun chair for visitors to sit in; the original is still in Independence Hall. George Washington sat in it when he led the Constitutional Convention.
The basement contained the kids' play area. We actually arrived just as story time was beginning. They had clothes for the kids to dress up in, a pretend tea set, kids' games for the time, and a game to guess the smells of Philadelphia in that era.
After we left the museum, we thought we'd see what the line looked like at the Liberty Bell. We passed by Independence Hall on they way, took a glimpse at the bell from outside since the line was way too long for the kids after a day at a museum, and headed back home.
We spent the rest of our day playing games and reading books.
Amelia & Carolyn prepared a waffle mix for the next morning.
Late night game of Clue while Colleen finished her Disney photo album.
On Monday, Carolyn & Amelia made waffles for everyone (Patrick had already left for work).
Austin worked on excavating a dinosaur fossil from his Argentina Little Passport box & did a magic show for us.
While Austin & Carolyn played Battleship, the girls worked on projects. Amelia made a terrarium & Colleen constructed a suncatcher.
The day had turned gorgeous, so we took a walk around the neighborhood and let the kids play at the playground. It was absolutely lovely.
We were sad to see Carolyn go, but we all enjoyed her visit very much!
